Job Description
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Geochemistry Group of the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The Geochemistry Group is located within the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a world-class national user facility. The emphasis of this position is to use atomic force microscopy (AFM) to probe a variety of mineral-water interface systems in support of several fundamental and applied research programs. One area of interest is to investigate mechanisms and quantify the rates of mineral carbonation reactions at mineral-water-supercritical CO2 interfaces. This research would make use of a one-of-a-kind high pressure AFM designed specifically for in situ imaging under supercritical CO2 at pressures and temperatures relevant to geologic carbon sequestration. This effort will be part of a larger research program at PNNL to probe carbonation processes using novel high pressure techniques including in situ XRD, MAS-NMR, and transmission and ATR infrared spectroscopies. The appointment would also involve at least one other area of mineral-water interfacial studies making use of a host of state-of-the-art AFM instruments. Regular production of technical manuscripts for the peer-reviewed scientific literature is expected. The appointment will be for up to three years.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.
Qualifications
Candidates must have in-depth knowledge and practical experience in surface and material/solution interface analytical techniques with an emphasis in AFM. Candidates must be self-motivated and able to work independently with or without supervision by senior staff. A background in mineral-water interface chemistry or geochemistry, would be beneficial.
A Ph.D. degree in chemistry, geochemistry, geology, mineralogy, materials science, physics, or related fields is required.
Equal Employment Opportunity
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital or family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.
Closing Statement
While internal candidates are required to complete the Pre-Screening questions included in the application process, they do NOT need to resubmit information regarding eligibility to work in the United States. Likewise, internal candidates do NOT need to complete an additional background check except in those situations where a Security Clearance is required and the staff member does not have a Security Clearance.
