Based in the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences, there are two vacancies for postdoctoral researchers to study the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall. This is a BBSRC-funded LoLa project to Prof. Jeff Errington, and the posts will last for 3 years in the first instance, with an extension for a further two years dependent upon a mid-term review. Post one is available in the group of Dr Richard Daniel and post two in Prof. Richard Lewis’ lab. It is expected that the post-holders will work closely in a team headed by Prof. Errington to study cell wall biosynthesis in the Gram positive paradigm, Bacillus subtilis. In particular, the in vitro activities of key enzymes and their interactions with structural proteins will be investigated applying a variety of genetical, biochemical and structural techniques. Motivated scientists with a demonstrable background in bacterial cell wall microbiology, (bio)chemistry, enzymology and protein-protein interactions are encouraged to apply for posts one. Previous experience of the structure determination of membrane proteins by X-ray crystallography is a requirement for applications for post two. Specific requirements are detailed in sections V and VI on page 12 of the further particulars and applicants are requested to make clear in their application whether they are applying for post one or two.
